A Virtual Scout Camp – My Two Mums

A Virtual Scout Camp - My Two Mums

This weekend (11th-12th July) I am taking part in a Scout camp and I can’t wait. Since lock down started, one of the things I’ve missed the most, is not seeing my Beaver Scouts face to face, at their weekly meeting. We are lucky to have a very supportive group that has helped me keep Scouting during a weekly zoom Beaver meeting. But camping is what I love most about Scouting.

With sleepovers and trips to camp grounds cancelled, my Group Scout Leader decided to organise a virtual Scout Camp. Within days of it being planned, the official UK Scouts announced plans to host their own Great Indoors Weekender. Which means every Scout and even if you are not a Scout, can join a fun weekend of activities encouraging Skills for Life, with special celebrity guests and more.

Camping at home

There will be den building, compass coding, camp fires and even a bed time story. The great thing about it all being online is you can dip in and out of whichever activities you feel like participating in. You could also use it as inspiration to plan your own camp. Set up air beds in the living room, or dust the tent off and see if you can all spend two nights in it. I know we’ve all spent the last 3 months together within 4 walls, but mixing it up a bit might add some more fun to your weekend.

Toasted Marshmallows

The little dude and I will be using the time to brush up on his Cub skills before face to face Scouting returns. He really wants to master using a fire steel, so he will be our camp fire starter for the weekend. I am looking forward to some tasty S’mores.

If you do join in this weekend, make sure you use the hashtags #TGIWeekender #TheGreatIndoors. It would be great to see lots of people joining in

Activities at Camp Bestival – AD Gifted

Activities at Camp Bestival - AD Gifted

Last year we declared Camp Bestival 2019 our favourite so far! I think it was a combination of wonderful weather, a great pitch in Camping Plus, fab acts and M enjoying lots of Activities.

Camp Bestival activities

We say it every year, but there really is something for everyone at Camp Bestival. Ever since we first started taking M to Camp Bestival, we’ve been able to find something new to do.

There are so many free activities available that you could keep your whole family busy without spending a penny. But there are also activities with a cost attached, depending on materials needed for the activity. Over the years M has crafted a sword, a wand, a dream catcher, bounced on the World’s Biggest Bouncy Castle, learned circus skills, made a jump rocket and many many more activities.

The musical line up is always fantastic, but there are also activities for the grown ups that offer a different experience. Yoga, stand up comedy, poetry, informative talks and dance classes, are just some of the activities you can discover as you wander the site.

Most of the activities are only discovered by exploring the site. Some require you to sign up for a place and some just let you turn up to join in. From our experience the kid’s activities get signed up really quickly. If you are going with family and friends it might be worth dividing and conquering to get on the activity you see a queue for. But don’t worry, like I said, there is plenty of activities, so don’t feel like you are missing out if you don’t manage to get a space on one of the activities.

The great thing about Camp Bestival is that each area of the festival gives off a different vibe. So you can find yourself raving hard with Big Fish Little Fish or chilling in the shade, whilst your kids create mud pies in Lizzie’s Way in the Dingly Dell. Each day is different and it’s advisable to just go with the flow.

If you want a taste of what Camp Bestival has to offer, they have joined forces with the UK’s coolest amusement park, Dreamland Margate. In April, Camp Bestival will be taking their vibe from the much-loved family festival, to Dreamland with a full park takeover of fun and magic for all the family to enjoy over the school holidays.

There will be live music, rides and more for all the family. Dreamland Margate reopens on Saturday 4th April and is open every day until 20th April, and it’s free to enter! Guests can pay per ride or buy discounted ride wristbands in advance online to save 25%. Members ride for free.

Camp Bestival takes place at Lulworth Cove on 30th July – 2nd August 2020. Go buy your tickets NOW!
