Intimate Maryland farm wedding with sparklers, confetti and an original song

Intimate Maryland farm wedding with sparklers, confetti and an original song

Carly and Shannon’s relaxed and intimate Maryland wedding took place at Tusculum Farm amidst rolling hills and colorful autumn leaves. As a professional wedding photographer, Carly didn’t want the day to feel like work, so the couple made sure their day felt wholly unique. They chose, for example, not to hide from one another all day, and as a surprise, Carly wrote and sang the song that played while the couple walked down the aisle.

Guests also handed each bride flowers as she walked down the aisle to create Carly’s bouquet, a representation of Carly’s late father who used to visit bearing wild flowers as a gift,

They also had a surprise confetti canon at the end of the ceremony.

“There were so many small, unique touches that helped curate a day bursting at the seams with joy and laughter,” they write. “We wanted our guests to leave feeling so loved.”

What advice would you give to engaged LGBTQ+ couples?

Start your planning with a private conversation with just you and your partner. Remember at the end of the wedding it is just you two! Try to find the few things that mean the most to just you two and then go forward planning. It will help you both to stay true to the two of you and not be swayed by the thousands of websites, opinions, and past events you’ve seen.

Whether it rains, snows, or is sunny and 100 degrees, you are getting to marry your person. At the end of the day that is what was MOST exciting for us. The party was just the icing on top of finding a life partner.

What advice do you have for vendors and venues working with LGBTQ+ couples?

Please use the word couple, spouse or partner. There were so many times we had to mention or correct people. It didn’t upset us, but we know it could offend others. It is such a gentle and easy shift to start using more kind and open language.

What challenges did you face as an LGBTQ+ couple planning your wedding?

“They say when you least expect it, that’s when it will happen. That couldn’t be more true for me. At a time in my life when I had almost given up on love, I met Kayla.”

So begins the story of Georgia couple Courtney and Kayla, who got engaged at their favorite restaurant two days before Christmas. Kayla proposed at a dinner surrounded by family, with a dessert that spelled out “Will You Marry Me?”

“I turned around and Kayla was on one knee with the most beautiful ring I have ever seen! I was completely in shock and couldn’t say ‘YES!’ fast enough!”

The couple’s engagement photos were taken at a local farm called Prospect Farms.

“She is without a doubt my better half and the absolute love of my life,” says Courtney. “Never settle, take a leap of faith, and never, ever give up on true love. Your happily ever after could be just around the corner.”

Against the backdrop of country fields and blue skies, Kristin and Angela celebrated their love. The Reston, Virginia, couple married at Buckley Farm, New York, among friends and family. From the flowers grouped in mason jars to the lovable dog watching the going-ons, the outdoor wedding was an exquisite way to commit to each other. Eucalyptus branches and maple leaves added delicate touches to their floral arrangements, and the weather couldn’t have been lovelier for an outdoor wedding. They each walked down the aisle with their parents, Angela first, then Kristin. Under a majestic weeping willow, the two brides said their vows. Afterward, the couple moved the celebration inside to one of Buckley Farm’s historic barns.

Kristin and Angela both wore white wedding gowns, telling Equally Wed it was stressful to “keep each other’s dress from each other, while worrying that we might pick the same one.” But no detail was too worrisome: they were “able to laugh about all the challenges that go into planning a wedding.” As an LGBTQ+ couple, they said they were concerned about finding accepting LGBTQ+ inclusive wedding vendors. Yet the couple was ultimately delighted by “just how supportive everyone was. We felt so much much love through the entire process.” More than anything, the wedding was filled with “filled with love, laughter and joy.”

“You don’t have to fit into any molds or stereotypes,” they advise other LGBTQ+ couples. “Just make your wedding fit you and surround yourself with people who love and support you.”
