The Queer Moments of the Biden-Harris “America the Beautiful” Video

The Queer Moments of the Biden-Harris "America the Beautiful" Video

The Biden-Harris campaign released a new short video after their win was called Saturday. It speaks to all Americans—and includes several queer people, as well as a soundtrack by one of our queer foremothers.

Biden-Harris - America the Beautiful

The “America the Beautiful” video was inspired by the work “Art is…,” by Lorraine O’Grady, who performed the original work at the 1983 African American Day Parade in Harlem. As Culture Type explains, that piece was also included in “Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power,” a “landmark international traveling exhibition” with art by more than 60 Black artists. The Biden-Harris campaign had begun using the slogan “Battle for the Soul of the Nation” towards the end of their campaign, and reached out to O’Grady before making the video. “The new video is also a nod to the power of Black creativity,” Culture Type tells us.

It’s also full of queerness. There’s a moment at about 1:04 where we see two men getting married. At 1:33, we see drag queen Little Miss Hot Mess, co-founder of Drag Queen Story Hour and children’s book author. And the song that plays throughout is “America the Beautiful,” rendered by Ray Charles, but written by Katharine Lee Bates, a professor and activist (1859-1929) who lived for 25 years in a “Boston marriage” with fellow professor Katharine Coman. She might not have used the term “lesbian” herself, but at the very least, she’s one of our queer foremothers. (Read more about her and a recent picture-book biography here.)

Bonus fun fact: Both Bates and O’Grady are alumnae of Wellesley College, which is also Hillary Clinton’s alma mater (and mine, as happens). That won’t change the results of the 2016 election, but feels at least like some solace.

Alison Hammond recreates Kylie’s ‘Can’t Get You Out of My Head’ video

Alison Hammond has recreated the music video for Kylie Minogue’s classic 2001 smash hit “Can’t Get You Out of My Head”, and it is the ray of light we desperately needed.

The This Morning presenter and beloved broadcaster shared a video of herself and four backing dancers recreating the famous music video on Instagram on Tuesday (November 3).

“Can’t Get You Out of My Head” was a huge hit for Kylie when it was released as the debut single from 2001’s Fever. Its iconic music video featured one of Kylie’s best known outfits, a white hooded jumpsuit with a plunging neckline.

And Hammond served serious glamour in her amazing recreation, which was first posted on TikTok.

“Escape with my Kylie Minogue interview coming soon to This Morning,” Hammond captioned the video, revealing that her chat with the singer will air on November 12.

In the video, Hammond recreates Kylie’s robotic dance moves while donning a hooded white jumpsuit and lip-syncing to the classic song.

Sharing the video on TikTok, Hammond teased that a full version of the video could be on the way – which is, to be honest, exactly what we need right now.

Hammond’s version of “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” has captured the hearts of people on Twitter, with many calling for her to be given every award under the sun for keeping our spirits up in the never-ending hellscape that is 2020.

Hammond’s homage to Kylie comes just days before the singer-songwriter releases her 15th studio album Disco.

Kylie Minogue used to sneak into Kylie nights.

Kylie Minogue has a huge queer following, with her LGBT+ fanbase among her most dedicated and vocal supporters – and she has been vocal about her love for her queer fans, too.

Speaking to Jessie Ware on her podcast Table Manners in October, Kylie said she had a massive gay following “almost from the beginning of her career”.

“Maybe 1990, something like that, I was in Sydney working… and we were passing by Oxford Street where the most famous gay clubs are, and someone said, ‘Oh, there’s a Kylie night on tonight’, and I’d never heard of such a thing.

“I was like: ‘A what?’

“They said it was happening at the Aubrey, and I was like: ‘Let’s go!’”

Sadly, she didn’t party with her queer fans that night after her manager refused to comply.

“That was the first time I became aware of it being something,” she said.

“I have been to Kylie nights since and I am the least Kylie of all the Kylies, it’s hilarious.”

British electronic duo Erasure is gearing up to drop their 18th (yes, 18th!) studio album, The Neon, next week. As a taster, they’ve just released a new track and a video featuring some well-known trans and drag superstars.

“Nerves of Steel” is a classic Erasure song, with a thumping 80s-sounding synth background and Bell’s soaring vocals.

Watch.

The band isn’t featured in the video at all. Instead, it showcases a smorgasbord of drag and trans performers, including Amanda LePore, Raja (RPDR S3), Manila Luzon (RPDR S3), and Morgan McMichaels (RPDR S2).

“This is my favorite track from the album,” Erasure singer Andy Bell said in a statement. “I am truly honored that all our LGBTQIA+ friends were so creative during lockdown and helped us with this joyful video. Thanks for creating such a lovely piece of art!”

One of those included is Nina West (Drag Race S11), who posted her clip to Instagram, saying:

I never thought in a million years that I would ever be in a Erasure video. This is unreal. For all those times i belted out “A Little Respect” on stage or in my shower, or imagined I was a fairy, floating and singing “Oh L’amour”, and even driving to high school in the mornings and jamming out with @meg._it_is_my_name to “Always” – this is a pretty incredible moment. Thank you Andy and Vince.

Raja was similarly blown away to be asked, saying on Instagram: “Fourteen-year-old me would never believe I’d be asked to be part of an amazing ensemble of people, in a music video, for #ERASURE !!”

Another, Detox, said, “Erasure has been an integral part of my queer soundtrack from early on and it was a tremendous honor to be included in their new work!”

The full line-up of star-studded cameo appearances runs as follows: 6; Amanda Lepore; Aurora Sexton; Candis Cayne; Cara Melle; Cheddar Gorgeous; CT Hedden; Delta Work; Detox; Honey Davenport; Joey Jay; Kiki Xtravaganza; Manila Luzon; Mayhem Miller; Mercedes Tyler; Morgan McMichaels; Nina West; Pandemonia; Pearl; Raja; Sherry Vine; and Widow Von ‘Du.

The Neon is out August 21.

Now there’s video of Jerry Falwell Jr. with his pants unzipped and partying with shirtless guys / Queerty

Now there’s video of Jerry Falwell Jr. with his pants

Hey, remember that weird picture of Jerry Falwell Jr. with his pants open that was circulating on social media earlier this week? Well, now there’s a video to go along with it!

A little backstory: For no apparent reason, the Liberty University President tweeted a photo of himself this week on a yacht with his fly unzipped and his pants wide open. Beside him was a woman, not his wife, also with her pants wide open.

Politico reports that the woman’s name is Kathleen Stone and her Facebook page lists Liberty University as her employer. The photo was purportedly taken during a costume party on a yacht last weekend.

The image was shared across Falwell’s social media platforms, but was only up for a few minutes before he deleted it, though not before a screenshot was taken and widely circulated across the internet.

Now, video from the costume party has also surfaced and it offers a truly bizarre glimpse into what the staff at Liberty University does in their free time.

The video is supposed to be a parody intro to the show Trailer Park Boys, highlighting each of the partygoers dressed up as a different character, with Falwell as “Julian.”

It shows inebriated guests getting drunk, dancing, lounging around, and pretending to smoke cigarettes. In the background of one shot are a bunch of empty red Solo cups one might find at a college house party.

All of this is deeply ironic given that Liberty University prohibits alcohol consumption for all students on or off campus.

In an interview with a local radio station in Lynchburg, Virginia, Falwell explained the story behind the viral photo, saying the woman he is pictured beside is his “wife’s assistant,” adding, “She’s a sweetheart and I should never have put it up and embarrassed her.”

As for why they were posing together with their pants open, Falwell explained, “She’s pregnant so she couldn’t get her–she couldn’t get her pants up. And I was like, trying to like–my–I had on pair of jeans that I hadn’t worn in a long time so I couldn’t get mine zipped either. And so–and so–I just put my belly–I just put my belly out like hers.”

“We were on vacation. And, anyway, long story short it was just in good fun. That’s it.”

He added, “I’ve apologized to everybody. And I’ve promised my kids I’m going to try to be–I’m gonna try to be a good boy from here on out.”

Viral video of gay proposal has reduced Twitter to a weeping mess

Gay couple Brandon and Cody TikTok Twitter proposal marriage

A viral video of a guy surprise proposing to his boyfriend has turned us into a blubbering, weeping mess – and serves as a timely reminder that there are good things in the world.

In the video, Cody distracted his boyfriend Brandon by asking him to look at something in the distance. He then quickly got down on one knee and pulled out a ring.

Brandon promptly burst into tears and struggled to get any words out – but he eventually put out his hand for his new fiancé to put the ring on his finger.

The video was recorded in August of last year and shared on TikTok, but blew up on Twitter last week after it was shared on the last day of Pride Month.

Twitter was reduced to tears by the heartwarming, beautiful proposal video.

“Oh my god I’m crying. Beautiful,” one Twitter user commented.

Another person said: “I wish there was a ‘love’ button on Twitter because this is SO beautiful and sweet! Congratulations boys! I hope you have a very long and happy life together!”

I guess you could say, it was such a perfect relationship, they both knew right away and Cody got down on one knee on August 17, 2019 and asked Brandon for his hand in marriage.

Someone else simply said: “Yes you made us all cry!”

Cody and Brandon are now planning to tie the knot on October 24 of this year, according to TheKnot.com.

It was love at first sight when Cody and Brandon met for the first time in March 2019.

On the website, the couple describe their love story as being “not quite like any other”.

They met on Instagram in December 2017 and started “frequently chatting”.

The pair quickly became online friends and they finally met for the first time in March 2019.

When Cody visited Brandon in Virginia, it was love at first sight.

“I guess you could say, it was such a perfect relationship, they both knew right away and Cody got down on one knee on August 17, 2019 and asked Brandon for his hand in marriage,” the website says.

The couple are planning on having two children together and will live in North Carolina, where Cody pratices law.
